The 69传媒 and the Department of Psychology are presenting "The 2013 Julian Jaynes Symposium on Consciousness" on Thursday October 10 at 3:00 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Anand Paranjpe, Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser University and his talk is entitled "An Eastern Perspective on Consciousness." All are invited to attend.

Dr. Khashayar Ghandi, Department of Chemistry, Mount Allison University will present a seminar on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Ghandi鈥檚 presentation is entitled 鈥淣anochemistry Meets Particle Physics.鈥� The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, room 212. All are welcome to attend.

The campus community is invited to attend the 2013 Trudeau Lecture entitled: "Picking Up The Pieces: Seeking Out The Roots Of Violence Against Indigenous Women" on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall. In the first Trudeau Lecture to come to the 69传媒, beloved M茅tis author and playwright Maria Campbell, 2012 Trudeau Fellow, talks about the connection between her volunteering, her academic career, and her work in literature, theatre, and video to end violence against women. Growing up in a Road Allowance M茅tis community in northern Saskatchewan, Dr. Campbell witnessed the power that women in her community exercised, as well as the violence they experienced. A lifelong student of Indigenous oral history, she will speak to what she has learned of traditional ways that fostered respect and authority for Aboriginal women, and about how colonization disrupted those ways and introduced gendered violence. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Ritter, a celebrated playwright, humourist, essayist, fiction writer, and CBC Radio writer and host, lives in Toronto, but contrives to be out of town, especially on PEI, whenever she can. Her lecture is co-sponsored by the 69传媒English Department and the Gallery. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend!

The 69传媒Student Union is partnering with Farm Credit Canada's "Drive Away Hunger" to help support local food banks. We are excited about this partnership as any food or monetary donation collected will go to support the 69传媒Food Bank. A number of our indoor intramural programs are starting this weekend at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre: Co-ed Volleyball-Sundays 6:00 pm-8:00 pm; Men's Basketball-Mondays, 6:00 pm-8:00 pm; Ladies/Men's Squash-Mondays 6:00 pm-8:00 pm; Badminton (co-ed)-Wednesdays 7:00 pm-9:00 pm; and Women's Basketball-Thursdays 4:00 pm-6:00 pm. Fee for program: full time 69传媒students and Sports Centre members have FREE access. Non-members fee is $20 per person per sport (September/October-end of November) or non-members can pay a drop-in fee of $5. Table Tennis meeting: Table Tennis meeting will be held on October 10 at 6:00 pm, 2nd floor lobby, Sports Centre. We wish to meet with those interested to receive feedback in the creation of a Table Tennis League.

We are very happy to announce that after receiving approximately 30 suggestions, the name of the Peer Recognition Program has been selected! Our program will be called SOAR (for "Shout Out" Award Recipient). Thank you to Nicole Higginbotham for this successful suggestion--she will receive an Ipod Nano for her submission, congratulations Nicole! Thank you to the many others who also took the time to submit names for the program. We also appreciate receiving a wide range of SOAR nominations from across campus for the month of September. We picked one randomly from these nominations and are pleased to announce that the first recipient of the SOAR award is Bruce Ferguson. Bruce's nominator noted that he stepped into a project already in progress and "... made sure he was there for the vendor folks as well as the 69传媒team. He stayed late, helped us all out, offered suggestions, explained things for us and was instrumental in getting things in place quickly while maintaining a sense of humour and positive perspective." Congratulations, Bruce on "soaring above!" He will receive an item from the 69传媒bookstore while the person who nominated Bruce will be entered into the year-end nominators draw. The 69传媒 is proud to host the Canada Gairdner Wightman Laureate for the 2013 Gairdner Lectures. In the morning of Tuesday, October 15, Dr. James C. Hogg will deliver a lecture to senior high school science students from across the province entitled 鈥淲hy is breathing important?鈥� That afternoon, he will give a public lecture called 鈥淒eveloping new treatments for chronic lung disease.鈥� The afternoon lecture is open to the public and is free of charge. The event begins at 2:00 pm in McMillan Hall, W. A. Murphy Student Centre. Since earning his PhD in experimental medicine from McGill University in 1969, Dr. James C. Hogg has remained focused on the study of obstructive lung disease. He has advanced our understanding of how both healthy and diseased lungs work, including asthma, and the effects of smoking and pollution. He built a world-renowned centre for pulmonary and cardiovascular research at St. Paul鈥檚 Hospital in British Columbia, which trains more than 100 professionals every year. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a member of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. For more information, visit .
