Ms. Lesli Bisgould, BA, LLP will present her lecture鈥�"Power and Irony: Why Animals Have No Legal Rights in Canada鈥擸et" as this year's Thane Campbell Lectureship in Law on Friday, October 4 at 1:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium (Room 242) in Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Ms. Bisgould has been practicing law since 1992, focusing on animal law and animal rights. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto鈥檚 faculty of law where she teaches a course on animals and the law. She is the author of Animals and the Law (2011), a Canadian law textbook published by Irwin Law. This free lecture is sponsored by 69传媒and the Law Foundation of Prince Edward Island. The Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training are conducting a survey of young adults who have made their transition from secondary school to their next step (whether it be post-secondary, work, or other endeavours). Eligibility criteria: current student, has tried post-secondary but did not continue, or decided to work after secondary school. The survey, which is part of a larger project to research the strengths and gaps in the school-based delivery of career development services and best practices for strengthening career education, takes approximately 15鈥�25 minutes to complete and is available in English and French. Participation is voluntary and all responses are anonymous and confidential. Those who complete the survey will be eligible to win an iPad! The campus community is invited to attend the 2013 Trudeau Lecture entitled: "Picking Up The Pieces: Seeking Out The Roots Of Violence Against Indigenous Women" on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall. In the first Trudeau Lecture to come to the 69传媒, beloved M茅tis author and playwright Maria Campbell, 2012 Trudeau Fellow, talks about the connection between her volunteering, her academic career, and her work in literature, theatre, and video to end violence against women. Growing up in a Road Allowance M茅tis community in northern Saskatchewan, Dr. Campbell witnessed the power that women in her community exercised, as well as the violence they experienced. A lifelong student of Indigenous oral history, she will speak to what she has learned of traditional ways that fostered respect and authority for Aboriginal women, and about how colonization disrupted those ways and introduced gendered violence. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

"Introduction to Japanese Pop Culture" lecture by The Consul General of Japan at Montreal, Mr. Tatsuo Arai will take place on Monday, September 30 at 2:15 pm in AVC's Lecture Theatre B. This presentation goes beyond ancient culture, rich traditions, and Zen gardens, and speaks to the modern world which is filled with manga, anime, video games, and innumerable aspects of Japanese pop culture catered to the interests of today鈥檚 youth. All are welcome to attend!

The annual Community Connector Volunteer Fair will be taking place on Wednesday, October 2, 11:00 am鈥�2:00 pm in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.
