Ms. Lesli Bisgould, BA, LLP will present her lecture—"Power and Irony: Why Animals Have No Legal Rights in Canada—Yet" as this year's Thane Campbell Lectureship in Law on Friday, October 4 at 1:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium (Room 242) in Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Ms. Bisgould has been practicing law since 1992, focusing on animal law and animal rights. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto’s faculty of law where she teaches a course on animals and the law. She is the author of Animals and the Law (2011), a Canadian law textbook published by Irwin Law. This free lecture is sponsored by 69´«Ã½and the Law Foundation of Prince Edward Island. The Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training are conducting a survey of young adults who have made their transition from secondary school to their next step (whether it be post-secondary, work, or other endeavours). Eligibility criteria: current student, has tried post-secondary but did not continue, or decided to work after secondary school. The survey, which is part of a larger project to research the strengths and gaps in the school-based delivery of career development services and best practices for strengthening career education, takes approximately 15–25 minutes to complete and is available in English and French. Participation is voluntary and all responses are anonymous and confidential.Those who complete the survey will be eligible to win an iPad! Please pass along to friends and family who may be eligible! Basketball action: The women's basketball team will head to Queen's University for the Tindall Invitational Tournament, October 4–6. Their first game will take place on Friday, October 4 against Queen's at 7:00 PM AST. Their second game of the tournament is against Concordia on Saturday, October 5 at 3:00 pm AST. The women's team will take on Lethbridge in their final game of the tournament on Sunday, October 6 at 11:00 am AST. The men's basketball team will compete against Lee Academy in exhibition play on Saturday, October 5 at 9:00 am at Holland College in Charlottetown. Hockey action: The men's hockey team will compete against Lakehead University in Ontario for exhibition games on Friday and Saturday at 8:30 pm AST. The women's hockey team takes on StFX in exhibition play on Saturday at 4:00 pm in Nova Scotia. The team will compete against them again on Sunday at 12:00 pm. Field Hockey action: The 69´«Ã½field hockey team is taking part in the second tournament of the season hosted by UNB. On Saturday, the girls will battle host UNB at 12:00 pm and take on Acadia at 5:00 pm. Sunday's action will see the Panthers up against Dal at 9:00 am, SMU at 11:00 am, and STFX at 2:00 pm. Soccer action: Both teams host Memorial University on Saturday, October 5. Women's game at 3:00 pm, men's game following at 5:15 pm. The teams will battle it out again on Sunday, with the women's match at 11:00 am and the men's competition at 1:15 pm. David Chilton, best-selling author of "The Wealthy Barber" and "The Wealthy Barber Returns" and Dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den is coming to Charlottetown on October 28. Chilton will headline Enactus (Entrepreneurial Action Us) UPEI's event on entrepreneurship and innovation which will be held at the Confederation Centre of the Arts on Monday, October 28 at 7:00 pm. Chilton's 75-minute keynote address will provide attendees with valuable information on his experiences as well as advice on entrepreneurship and financial planning. 500 free copies of 'The Wealthy Barber Returns' books will also be distributed to lucky attendees. The 69´«Ã½student-led event will kick off with a 'PEI Small Business Panel Discussion' featuring four local entrepreneurs—Jeff Squires of PEI Brewing Company and Cavendish Beach Music Festival; Gillian McCrae of GetGifted; Joelle MacPhee of Ooka Island; and Matthew Jelley of Maritime Fun Group. The campus community is invited to attend the 2013 Trudeau Lecture entitled: "Picking Up The Pieces: Seeking Out The Roots Of Violence Against Indigenous Women" on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall. In the first Trudeau Lecture to come to the 69´«Ã½, beloved Métis author and playwright Maria Campbell, 2012 Trudeau Fellow, talks about the connection between her volunteering, her academic career, and her work in literature, theatre, and video to end violence against women. Growing up in a Road Allowance Métis community in northern Saskatchewan, Dr. Campbell witnessed the power that women in her community exercised, as well as the violence they experienced. A lifelong student of Indigenous oral history, she will speak to what she has learned of traditional ways that fostered respect and authority for Aboriginal women, and about how colonization disrupted those ways and introduced gendered violence. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Josh McInnis has been hired as of yesterday to take on the role as Bar Manager. He has been very busy getting things ready for The Wave to open tomorrow, Wednesday, October 2 at 11:00 am. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Ben.

There will be information sessions held for building Fire Wardens, Guardians, Evacuation Plan Administrators and all alternates prior to the annual evacuation drills which will be held this Fall. Information discussed will include roles and the evacuation process. This will also be a good opportunity for those involved in the evacuation process to ask questions. The fifth Rob Haines Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, October 6 at Glen Afton Golf Course. Join us for a day of fun as we pay tribute to a colleague who had a deep and lasting impact on our lives, our students, and our University as a whole, while raising funds for the Dr. Robert Haines Graduate Research Award in Chemistry. The tournament will begin at noon for those playing 18 holes, and at 1:00 pm for 9 holes. No golfing skill or experience required—best ball/scramble format. Register individually or in teams of four. Cost is $30 for 9 holes including a shared golf cart or $43 for 18 holes with cart. Sliding scale available for students on a budget, just let us know. Club rental extra. There will also be a barbecue dinner following the tournament. Cost for the barbecue, including hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, dessert, drinks, and other goodies is $15. 69´«Ã½Athletics and Recreation Department will have an Open House for students, staff, faculty, and community members on October 3, 11:00 am–2:00 pm. The open house will showcase our varsity athletes, tours of the facility, our Panther Sports Medicine Clinic, as well as allow visitors to participate in a FREE 20 minute ZUMBA class, register for intramural programs, and learn more about the services the Sports Centre offers. We'll also have a free Athletic Strength n' Cardio Circuit class from 11:15 am–Noon, and an Athletic Strength Circuit class from 1:15–2:00 pm. For those who are new to fitness and new to the 69´«Ã½Fitness Centre, take this time to meet with a trainer to go over the basics of fitness, learn proper technique, check out all of our fitness programs and tour the gym facility. Membership has its benefits. Come out and see what we have to offer!
