Women’s Hockey Panthers welcome Lindsay Johnston

69´«Ã½Women's Hockey Head Coach Bruce Donaldson is pleased to announce that Lindsay Johnston is joining the Panthers for the 2014-15 season.

The 5'7'' forward from Bowmanville, Ontario is currently playing her third season with the Durham West Lightning of the Provincial Women's Hockey League.

Donaldson believes that Johnston will quickly adapt to the AUS game because of her size, speed, and aggressive style of play. 'Lindsay possesses leadership skills that will help us going forward. She has great game sense and plays both ends of the ice with passion,' he said. 'Her speed and aggressiveness are well suited to the style of play ‘out East.' We are looking forward to Lindsay stepping in as a leader and contributing to our goal of academic and athletic excellence.'

Johnston will study psychology and says she chose 69´«Ã½because it was a terrific mix of athletics and academics. 'When I visited Prince Edward Island, I fell in love with the city of Charlottetown, the 69´«Ã½campus, and the facilities,' she said. 'The girls on the team made me feel welcome and at home, so it was an easy decision and just felt right.'

The gritty forward also said she is anxious to start her AUS/CIS career and is looking forward to the overall University experience with the Panthers.

69´«Ã½Athletics and Recreation Director Bill Schurman welcomes Johnston to the 69´«Ã½family. 'I would like to welcome Lindsay to the 69´«Ã½, she's a great addition to the Panther family,' he said.

69´«Ã½Men’s Hockey recognizes Billy Mulligan

69´«Ã½Men's Hockey is pleased to recognize Billy Mulligan as a hockey program builder during a special ceremony prior to the Panthers final regular season home game on Saturday, February 15 against StFX at 7:00 pm.

69´«Ã½Men's Hockey has selected Mulligan to be honoured this year for his devotion and dedication to the promotion of the hockey program at UPEI. The Panther hockey team respects the dedication and work of individuals who have contributed to the success of its activities.

Mulligan has long been the driving force behind the organization of fundraising events in support of Men's Hockey at UPEI. In 1995, Mulligan first became involved alongside George Trainor to support the Panthers fundraising efforts. Then, in 2006, along with others, he was asked to take control and promote the Booster Club activities, which he continues to support to this day.

Mulligan has also remained active in many other volunteer activities throughout the province. He coached and organized minor football and hockey in the community, contributing many hours to the Charlottetown Minor Hockey, Colonel Gray High School, Prince of Wales College, and Senior Hockey leagues.

While he prefers to work behind the scenes, Mulligan's volunteer efforts have not gone unnoticed; he has been acknowledged by Sport PEI, the City of Charlottetown, Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association, St. Dunstan's Distinguished Alumni, and several other organizations.

In 1962-63, Mulligan played hockey with Saint Dunstan's University, and led the team to a fourth-place finish in the nine-team league. He played centre on a line that led the league in scoring, and was personally selected as the league all-star.

Attending the special ceremony on Saturday will be Mulligan's wife Georgina, daughters Kelly and Allison, former Saint Dunstan's University Coach Jack Kane, former 69´«Ã½Coaches Doug Currie and Dylan Taylor, Booster Club Treasurer Mike O'Brien, and Booster Club President Lennie Kelly.

First- and fourth-year students can win by participating in survey

69´«Ã½is once again inviting first- and fourth-year students to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). NSSE helps universities understand what students experience in and out of the classroom through a confidential, voluntary survey. 69´«Ã½uses the survey information to guide future decisions that will benefit students.

Approximately 1700 students have been invited by personal email to participate in the survey that takes about 15 minutes to complete. As a ‘thank you' for completing it, 69´«Ã½is offering students chances to win one of nine early bird prizes (valued at $100 each) and a grand prize (valued at $500) of either Amazon.ca gift cards or 69´«Ã½Campus Card credits. The first draw date of three early bird prizes is March 10, the second draw date is March 17, and the third is March 24. The $500 grand prize draw will be in mid-April. The earlier students complete the survey, the greater their chances of winning one of the prizes.

For more information on the project or how 69´«Ã½plans to use the results, contact Dr. Yuqin Gong, Institutional Research Officer at (902) 566-0361 or ygong@upei.ca.

Douglas Gibson: Alice Munro’s Editor to present March 6

Last December, Douglas Gibson, Alice Munro's editor and publisher, was in Norway observing the presentation of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Alice Munro, the first Canadian to receive the award.

On Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 pm in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, Gibson will tell stories about the experience of editing Alice Munro and numerous other famous Canadian authors, including Alistair MacLeod, Pierre Trudeau, Mavis Gallant, Hugh MacLennan, Barry Broadfoot, W.O. Mitchell, and Robertson Davies. He will also showcase and sign copies of his book about these experiences, Stories About Storytellers.

Gibson calls his talk a 'road show,' complete with slides and music. One reviewer wrote, 'it's an event worthy of Stephen Leacock. Charles Dickens, even.' Another wrote, 'Gibson is a living link to the foundation of our country's literature, and also an impish and charming performer. His lifelong passion for these great writers is contagious.'

He was born in the village of Dunlop in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, and worked on farms during the summer. After university at St. Andrews, where, he writes, he 'did everything but study,' he earned a Rhodes-like graduate scholarship to Yale. Immigrating to Canada in 1967, he became Managing Editor at Doubleday Canada in 1969, and MacMillan's publisher in 1979, where he also introduced authors like Ken Dryden and Christina MacCall.

In 1986, Gibson was lured to the great Canadian publishing company McClelland and Stewart (M&S) to start the first editorial imprint in Canada, Douglas Gibson Books. He became president and publisher of M&S in 2000, from which he retired in 2008. He still shepherds authors through the publishing system with his imprint.

'No one has done more for Canadian Literature than this man,' writes Alistair MacLeod. Alice Munro says of Stories about Storytellers, 'Here is my prize read for those interested in writers, books, Canada, life, and all that kind of thing.'

Gibson's show is co-hosted by the 69´«Ã½English Department and the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, with funding from The Canada Council for the Arts. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
