Dr. Jan Zwicky is not only one of Canada鈥檚 finest poets, she is also a distinguished philosopher, an influential writer on the intersection of ecology and poetry, and an accomplished violinist. Zwicky will read from her new poetic work on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:30 pm in the 69传媒Faculty Lounge, Main Building. A reception and book signing will follow. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

SPEAKER: Sarah McConnachie, Pathology and Microbiology TITLE: Studies on the Environmental Persistence of Loma salmonae Spores with Special Reference to Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture Practices

All are welcome to the second PEI History of Medicine Society meeting We will hear two talks: Dr. Peter Twohig will speak on "The Felonious Francis Tumblety: A Maritime Medical Mystery." In the summer of 1860, Francis Tumblety, the "Celebrated Indian Herb Doctor," began to practice in Saint John, New Brunswick, after stints in Montreal and Toronto. In each of these settings, Francis Tumblety ran afoul of both the established medical community and the law. Later, Tumblety would be arrested as a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and, most dramatically of all, has been implicated in London's infamous Jack the Ripper Murders. Dr. Twohig holds a Canada Research Chair at Saint Mary's, where he specializes in interdisciplinary studies of health and medicine. Dr. Shannon Murray will speak on "Janusz Korczak and the Idea of the 'Old Doctor.'" Janusz Korczak was the pen name of Dr. Henryk Goldszmit, a Polish physician, novelist, educational reformer, and father of the UN Charter of the Rights of the Child, though he is perhaps best known for his extraordinary, terrible march at the head of 200 children bound for the trains to Auschwitz. In his popular radio addresses, he was known as 'The Old Doctor," a title he also used for a character in the challenging children's novel King Matt. In both that novel and in the last days in his orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto Korczak seems acutely aware of the power of the physician and of the theatre. Please join us for the 2012 Gairdner Faculty Lecture at the 69传媒. Dr. Lorne A. Babiuk, Vice-President of Research at the University of Alberta and 2012 recipient of the Canada Gairdner Wightman Award, will deliver a lecture titled: 鈥淰accines: Potential for improving human and animal health.鈥� Lorne A Babiuk received his PhD (1972) from the University of British Columbia. He joined the University of Alberta as Vice-President (Research) in 2007. Prior to moving to the University of Alberta, he spent 34 years at the University of Saskatchewan where he was responsible for building the successful research institution VIDO (Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization). Under Lorne Babiuk鈥檚 leadership, VIDO became internationally recognized as a leader in novel vaccine development. While at VIDO, Babiuk completed its $19.4 million expansion (in 2005) and obtained funding for InterVac, its $140 million level-three biocontainment facility for work on infectious diseases (opened September, 2011). In addition to being the Vice-President (Research) and former Director of VIDO, Lorne Babiuk has published over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 100 essays and reviews, primarily in virology and immunology. His most recent focus has been on vaccine formulation and delivery. He is a fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America, the Royal Society of Canada and the European Academy of Sciences as well as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

SPEAKER: Doug Marchbank, Biomedical Sciences TITLE: Investigating the antitubercular mechanism of action of pseudopteroxazole: An affinity-based proteomics approach

Dr. Amitabh Jha, Department of Chemistry, Acadia University will present a seminar the "Development of Novel Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators."

The PEI Coalition for Women in Government along with the 69传媒Political Studies Society will host a panel discussion on youth in politics. The participants in this panel will discuss how youth can become more engaged in the political process, whether provincially, federally or in other ways. Speakers for this event will include NDP MP for the Quebec riding of Argentueil - Papineau - Mirabel, Mylene Freeman, who was among the 鈥淨uebec five鈥�, students elected to the House of Commons in the federal election last April. This event aims to encourage more young people to be involved in politics, either by running for office, campaigning for a political party or in other ways. The appearance in the news of issues relevant to young people, such as the recent protests in Quebec over tuition rises, makes the participation of youth in politics more important than ever. When issues that impact young people come to the forefront youth must know how to make their voices heard, whatever their views are. The youth in government panel discussion will be held at The Wave, 69传媒Murphy Student Centre on Tuesday, the 9th of October at 7pm. All are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
