Members of the 69传媒community are invited to review the following call out, and connect with a commendable student(s) they feel would be deserving of a nomination for this fellowship: The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and 3M Canada are proud to announce the Call for Nominations for the 2015 3M National Student Fellowship. The 3M National Student Fellowship honours up to ten students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their lives and at their college or university. These students embrace a vision of quality education that enhances their academic experience and beyond. The Fellowship is open to full-time, post-secondary undergraduate college or university diploma or degree program students registered at a Canadian institution. Candidates must be enrolled in their first undergraduate program, and not be in their first or final year. Each cohort member will: * Receive an award of $5,000 to be spent at their discretion. * Join the others at the June 2015 STLHE Conference at SFU and UBC (June 16 to 19) where they will also participate in a 3M National Student Fellowship retreat. * Receive a contribution toward the cost of conference travel and accommodations. * Develop a cross-Canadian collaborative project to enhance teaching and learning at the post-secondary level. Dr. Daphne Gill will present a seminar called "Do you hear what I hear? Improving clinical relevance in the behavioural assessment of animal models" on Tuesday, November 18 at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Dr. Gill is a candidate for adjunct and graduate faculty status in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. She is currently working with Neurodyn Life Sciences Inc., as a Director of Operations and also a sessional lecturer in the Department of Biology. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The 69传媒community was saddened to hear of the passing of Owen Sharkey, former psychology faculty member at SDU and UPEI. Owen passed away on Friday, November 7 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He was 92 years old. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Owen and his family lived in Saskatchewan before moving to PEI after the death of his father when Owen was six years old. He attended school in Morell and then attended SDU. While attending St. Dunstan鈥檚, he had the highest aggregate academic score in the college for four years. After graduation, he entered St. Augustine鈥檚 Seminary in Toronto and was ordained a priest in 1948. After ordination, he was a family counselor in Halifax for several years, and furthered his education before taking the position of Professor of Psychology at St. Dunstan鈥檚 University, later UPEI, serving as the Head of the Psychology Department for several years before devoting his full time to teaching and research. Our sympathies are with all of his family and friends he leaves behind. At Owen's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

69传媒Clarinet Professor, Karem J Simon is travelling to Houston this week with performances scheduled at Texas Southern University and the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. There he will be collaborating with TSU pianist Jane Perkyns in a program featuring the premier of Historias Y Danzas by James David, composition professor at Colorado State University. Dr. Perkyns has established an international reputation for her body of work as a collaborative pianist. This recital is also scheduled for performances in Canada at Mount Allison University on November 14, and at the Confederation Centre of the Arts Memorial Hall in Charlottetown on Sunday November 16 at 7:00 pm.

Retired 69传媒professor and past Dean of Science at 69传媒(1997-2006), Dr. Roger Gordon, will launch his first book鈥攁 memoir entitled Starting to Frame鈥攐n Friday, November 14, 6:30pm at The Haviland Club in Charlottetown. Dr. Gordon published a large number of scientific articles on biological control of insects during his academic career at Simon Fraser University, Memorial University, and UPEI. At UPEI, he chaired a research project on developing healthful products from blueberries and rosehips. But, the book that he has penned is a marked departure from his prior scientific endeavors. Starting to Frame speaks to Dr. Gordon's upbringing in post-war Sheffield, UK, and gives the reader insight into many of the stigmas of that era, including marital infidelity, divorce, and mental illness. 69传媒Security Services reminds the University community that the road that runs around the perimeter of campus is considered a provincial highway and is subject to the Highway Traffic Act. Of particular concern is that some roadway users are failing to stop at stop signs which are often adjacent to pedestrian crosswalks. Please come to a full stop at all stop signs to ensure both your safety and that of pedestrians. 69传媒Security Police Officers patrol the Perimeter Road and may issue fines for traffic violations under the Highway Traffic Act, such as: using a cell phone while operating a vehicle, texting, not wearing a seatbelt, or speeding. Please keep our campus safe for everyone.
