From June 26 to 30, the Jeux de l鈥橝cadie (Acadian Games) will be held in Charlottetown, including on the 69传媒campus. The Games are a combination of sport and cultural activities for Acadian and francophone youth from the Atlantic Provinces that promote youth development, the Acadian culture, and the French language. The University will host officials and members of the various missions in residence housing and for meetings, as well as be the venue for a number of sport activities. It is a large-scale event that would not be possible without the support of volunteers. There a number of volunteer roles available. While bilingualism is an asset, English-only speaking volunteers are welcome to register. The University offers for sale by public tender the following surplus equipment: 1 x 2004 Pontiac Montana, 6-Cylinder, Automatic w/ 291447 kms. Studded winter tires are mounted but summer tires are included. Also comes with roof-mounted carry box. 1 x 2008 (length) Boston Whaler 170 Montauk w/90hp Mercury EFI 4-stroke engine on trailer. Also comes with depth sounder and AM/FM radio. Trailer is a 2009 Karavan galvanized single axle with a swing-away tongue. Interested bidders can submit bid price for each item separately. Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers host an annual lecture named for their first Episcopal Liaison, Bishop John Sherlock. The 2015 Sherlock Lecture speaker is Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, Vatican Astronomer. The lecture will be Thursday May 28 at 7:00 pm in the Amphitheatre of UPEI鈥檚 Duffy Science Centre. Admission will be by a free-will offering to support Brother Guy鈥檚 work at The Vatican Observatory. Thursday鈥檚 lecture "At the Margins of the Universe: The Vatican's Astronomical Observatory" will include why the Vatican supports an observatory and how we do outreach to people on the margins who hunger to know about their place in the universe. Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ is the President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. A Jesuit brother and astronomer at the Vatican Observatory, his research is in meteorites and asteroids. He is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He received his BA and MA degrees from MIT, and earned his PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1978. Along with more than 200 scientific publications, he is the author of six popular astronomy books. In 2014 he received the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences for excellence in public communication in planetary sciences.
Everyone is invited to a public talk by Summerside鈥檚 Dr. Tiber F. M. Falzett on Scottish Gaelic language and culture as passed down through generations on Prince Edward Island. Hosted by the Institute of Island Studies at UPEI, the presentation is Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 7:30 p.m. in the 69传媒Faculty Lounge. Through oral traditions, music, songs, poetry, newspaper articles, and census returns, attendees will be taken on a journey in the life of Scottish Gaels on Prince Edward Island from their arrival on these shores to the decline and eventual disappearance of the language from everyday Island life by the close of the last century. Excerpts of field recordings made by Dr. John Shaw for the Institute of Island Studies in 1987, as well as earlier recordings made by others, will serve as primary vehicles in our explorations. Tiber will play these Gaelic recordings, which can be easily followed with English translations he鈥檒l provide. This small but significant collection of recordings holds tremendous potential for the homegrown linguistic and cultural renewal of these local traditions at the communal level. Tiber has himself conducted over a decade of fieldwork among Scottish Gaels in Cape Breton and the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles. He enjoys a good c猫ilidh sharing Gaelic songs and tunes on the bagpipes. He recently completed his PhD in Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh and has now returned home to the Island, where he is now a Research Associate of the Institute of Island Studies. Dr. Johanna Wolf, Associate Professor for the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University, British Columbia, is a candidate for UPEI's new Canada Research Chair in Sustainability, Resilience, and Island Contexts. Dr. Wolf will make two presentations, both of which will open to the campus and research communities. A general presentation, entitled 鈥淏etter off or Worse for Wear: Sustainability and Resilience Through Climate Adaptation", will take place on May 27, 2:00 鈥 3:00 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre A. A technical presentation, entitled 鈥淐onnect, Collaborate, Co-produce: Shaping Climate Change Adaptation to Foster Island Resilience and Sustainability", will take place on June 1, 10:00 鈥 11:00 am, in AVC Lecture Theatre A. Tuesday, June 16, 2015 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. AVC - The McCain Foundation Learning Commons Rm 287 This will be a 3 hour training session with handouts, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included). The Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course. May 27th 9:00-12:00 will be focused on planning lessons for storm days. On May 28th from 9:00-12:00 Bonnie Stewart and Charlene VanLeeuwen will talk about their experience teaching online and will also be available to answer questions. Please bring content and/or ideas related to your own courses as the sessions will be interactive. Both afternoons e-learning instructional designers will be available for individual appointments to help you continue working on what you start in the morning sessions. On Saturday, May 23rd, a one-day science, engineering, math, and technology camp is offered for girls in grades 7-9 from 9:30am-3:45pm at UPEI. The aim is to expose participants to hands-on science activities and careers so that they can make informed decisions about subject choices in later school years. Girls will participate in an engineering project, design in CAD, explore biophysics, and perform chemical experiments. They will also meet female role models who are working in the science, engineering, and technology fields. The event is hosted by IslandWISE (Women in Science and Engineering), EngineersPEI, ITAP (Innovation Technology Association of PEI), and UPEI.
