The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites members of the campus community to an event in memory of Dr. Benet Davetian, who recently passed away.  

A memorial to honour Dr. Davetian has been scheduled for September 8, 2022, between 4:00 and 5:00 pm in the Dawson Lounge, to celebrate the life and times of a dear friend, colleague, scholar, and teacher.

As part of the new residence building construction project, we will be required to have two power shutdowns that will affect the Atlantic Veterinary College, Blanchard Hall, Bernardine Hall, Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Memorial Hall, Cass Science Hall, Duffy Science Centre, Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Kelley Memorial Building, Robertson Library, Dalton Hall, K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre, Chaplaincy Centre, Daycare, Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, and Bill and Denise Andrew Hall. This power shutdown is necessary to bring permanent power to the new building.  

This shutdown is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31, 2022, beginning at 5:00 am and is expected to take approximately 2 hours to complete. The second power shutdown is scheduled for 5:00 pm on the same day and is expected to take approximately 2 hours to complete. This second shutdown will not affect the Atlantic Veterinary College and the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre.

The emergency power generators will be started for each building prior to the beginning of the power interruptions, which means that there will be no delay of power for anything currently on emergency power when the power is disconnected.

Environmental Studies and Island Studies welcomes the campus community to a research seminar presented by Kimberly Wishart Chu Foon, PhD candidate in Environmental Sciences at UPEI. Her talk, titled Networks and Conservation: A study on the island of Trinidad and Tobago, will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. in HSB 103. Kimberly Wishart Chu Foon is a candidate for a cross-appointed tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Studies and Island Studies. All are welcome.

Overview: The New Managers Certificate program is designed for those who are new to the manager/supervisor role or aspire to be a manager/supervisor. In this certificate program, the following topics will be explored in-depth: personal leadership styles, communication, strategic thinking, change management, performance management, creating effective teams, managing conflict, and cultural awareness in the workplace. After the completion of this certificate, participants will have the tools, techniques, and confidence to provide effective leadership within the workplace.

This program is designed for people who have just become a manager or supervisor, or are interested in becoming a manager and/or a supervisor, within either the public and private sector.

The Atlantic Veterinary College currently has a male beagle named Roddy available for adoption. He is two years old, neutered, and vaccinated; a dental cleaning will be included with his adoption. Roddy is a silly puppy with a lot of energy and loves to run and play. He loves to play with other beagles and has not shown any signs of aggression. However, Roddy doesn鈥檛 always pick up on other dog鈥檚 social cues, and sometimes other dogs become agitated with his playfulness. 

Roddy would thrive in a house with a family that is able to spend a lot of time training and exercising with Roddy. It is preferable that he is placed in a home where the owners are home most of the day. Single-pet and multi-pet households would be considered if it was the right fit.

This comprehensive two-day course offers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need enhanced training as a work requirement (high risk areas such as labs).

Cost of registration will be covered by HSE for all 69传媒faculty and staff, including students who require training for on-campus employment. Students who do not require training for on-campus employment are welcome to attend; however, the cost of registration will not be covered. Please note that lunch will not be provided.

The AVC SRLP program is designed to introduce DVM students to research career opportunities by involving them in a summer research project with a faculty mentor, with supplemental group sessions and a final poster presentation of their work.

Everyone is welcome to attend the thesis defence of Vanessa Clemis who will present the "Mapping and functional characterization of powdery mildew resistance genes in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.)" to complete the requirements for the MSc in Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences.

Thesis description: Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is a dual-purpose crop widely cultivated for its fiber and seed properties. However, the crop incurs yield and seed quality losses due to fungal diseases, including powdery mildew (PM) caused by the obligate biotrophic fungus Podosphaera lini. Whereas several PM-resistant flax cultivars are known, the genetic factors and mechanisms of flax resistance to PM are not well established. Genome-wide association mapping was conducted in the NorMan x Linda flax population and 75 quantitative trait loci and quantitative trait nucleotides were identified, and were co-located with 91 resistance gene analogs. Furthermore, 6 candidate resistance genes were used for gene expression analyses and differential gene expression was observed. Altogether, this study identified candidate genes associated with PM resistance, provided new insights into the potential mechanisms of action for flax resistance to PM, and will help in designing strategies for developing flax lines with increased PM resistance.

The 69传媒Health & Wellness Centre will provide COVID-19 Booster Clinics on September 14 and 15 in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The clinics will provide first dose, second dose, and booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines to students, faculty, and staff, as well as family members who are 18 and older. First come, first served. There is no need to make an appointment, and there is no charge for the vaccine. Vaccines are provided by the Province of Prince Edward Island's Chief Public Health Office (CPHO). Please bring your provincial health card or 69传媒ID as we need to provide a record to the CHPO.

Overview: This course will give employees and managers a better sense of how to fully support LGBTQ+ members within the workplace. Overview: All Canadians are called to learn about Canada鈥檚 relationship with Indigenous peoples and how we can move forward in reconciliation and restitution. In the Indigenous Cultural Awareness course, facilitator Julie Pellissier-Lush, author, actor, engaged community member, educator of Mi鈥檏maq culture and heritage, and Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island, will highlight and explain in-depth the traditional knowledge of the Mi鈥檏maq (the Indigenous peoples of Mi鈥檏ma鈥檏i, and specifically Epetwitk), their life before contact with Europeans, the impact of colonization on the Mi鈥檏maq, and how all Canadians can move forward positively with Indigenous peoples. This will be done in a fun way that will focus on participants feeling safe in the learning circle provided and ensure all taking part in the course will leave with a greater knowledge of traditional Mi鈥檏maq teachings and history, and how to engage and grow through truth, reconciliation, and restitution.

2) Meet at the Teaching and Learning Centre, Robertson Library Annex Room 230 at 3:30 pm for an informal opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversation around academic integrity issues with Dr. Sarah Elaine Eaton from the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary.

Join Dr. Eaton for an evidence-informed keynote about key issues and trends related academic integrity including: (a) how COVID-19 changed our understanding of academic integrity; (b) expanded definitions of academic integrity that extend beyond student conduct; (c) how equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and Indigenization play a role in academic integrity; (d) cutting-edge topics such as the role artificial intelligence is playing in teaching, learning, and assessment; and (e) updated and practical approaches to promote integrity and address misconduct. You鈥檒l come away with new insights, lots to think about, and ideas for how to move forward.
