Island Lecture Series Double Feature:
鈥淪ami Educational Viewpoints From the Past and Present鈥� and 鈥淭he Use of Yoik, Traditional Sami Singing, in Education鈥�

Kicking off this season's Island Lecture Series on Tuesday, September 12, are two guests who are NOT talking about islands, but rather about something that resonates with islands and islanders from the North: Sami culture from Lapland.
Pigga Keskitalo will present 鈥淪ami Educational Viewpoints From the Past and Present.鈥�&苍产蝉辫; In this presentation, Keskitalo will review S谩mi education history and current practices. Currently, there is a need for innovative solutions so that everyone can reach education in their Indigenous languages. Endangered Sami languages have developed distance education since the 1990s so that children and language learners 鈥� despite their location 鈥� can learn Sami languages. In Finland, there is a Sami language distance education project. The Academy of Finland-funded research project, ADVOST, concentrated on developing this distance education in a small children鈥檚 context. The research project also implemented land-based education, storytelling, and playful learning into distance education. Keskitalo will present this project and core results in addition to the new research project LINCOSY (funded by the Finnish Research Council, former Academy of Finland), which concentrates on Sami language teaching in the Nordic level.
Laila Nutti will present her PhD project about the pedagogical use of yoik with the title: 鈥淭he Use of Yoik, Traditional Sami Singing, in Education.鈥�
Pigga Keskitalo and Laila Nutti are on Prince Edward Island as part of the ConnectED Scholar Exchange, which aims to create connections between early-career scholars and researchers across the Arctic. Hosted by Dr. Kathy Snow (Education), David Varis (Education/IKERAS), and Dr. Laurie Brinklow (Island Studies), our guests will meet with graduate students and educators across the Island from September 18-21, 2023.

The 2023 Distinguished Alumni are Dr. Mary Goodfellow, SDU '65; Monica Elaine Campbell, BSc '78; and Roger Sinclair, BBA '79. The 2023 Inspiring Young Alumni are Danaiet Teame, BScN '12; Tyler Coady, BA '13; and Dant茅 Bazard, BA '16.

There are some exciting developments at 69传媒as PEI aims to become net zero by 2040. Dr. Marva Sweeney-Nixon, Associate Vice-President of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, invites the 69传媒campus community to an information session to find out more about the province of PEI's net-zero framework, the Cleantech Academy, UPEI's proposed role, and our next steps. Representatives from the province and the Cleantech Academy will be presenting. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions and give feedback and suggestions for the new interdisciplinary graduate program in cleantech leadership.

Dr. Suzanne Gray, Associate Professor, School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State University, will present 鈥�Using sensory ecology to understand how fish respond to anthropogenic environmental change.鈥�&苍产蝉辫;
Dr. Gray is a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Biology.
Overview: Project management is a core competency in our rapidly changing environment.
The Project Management Certificate discusses and evaluates what is a project, what defines success, management of stakeholders, communication, leadership, project lifecycles, risk, budgets, and schedules. The program emphasizes agile and change management skills which are important in today鈥檚 project environment. At the Certificate completion, participants will have the confidence and ability to plan, manage and complete almost any project size.
Designed for: Professionals who are responsible for managing projects, programs and portfolios; project team leads, managers whose resources are allocated to projects or who support project work, business analysts, project sponsors
Duration: Six (6) courses for a total of forty-two (42) hours; 鈥淔oundations of Project Management鈥� course is two (2) days, and all other courses are one (1)day.

This interactive certificate strives to give the tools needed for participants to鈥痬anage social media channels with a confident brand voice. This certificate will focus on:
- Identifying needs within social media platforms
- Creating a unique brand voice

- Assistance in the creation of a social media/marketing plan

This certificate is spread over two days to give time to create content and have real-time feedback from the facilitator and other participants.鈥�

Every post-secondary institution in the Atlantic region (also known as the Wabanaki Confederacy) with an Indigenous centre will sew a ribbon skirt or shirt together. Participants are welcome to join in person or virtually. The program is meant to create a sense of nationhood while sharing important teachings about the ribbon skirt/shirt. Held on September 22 and 23, the workshop will be hosted by the Mawi鈥檕mi Indigenous Student Centre in Room 240, Bernardine Hall, and begins at 3:00 pm and concludes at 7:00 pm on both days. All are welcome to take part (69传媒community and greater PEI community). There will be light refreshments and an opportunity to connect with others. Two sewing machines will be available as will be some material to make the skirts and shirts. Please contact the Mawi' Omi Centre (mawiomi@upei.ca) or Jasmine Pauze (jpauze@upei.ca) to register so we can ensure you have all you need during the workshop.
Hosted in the Mawi鈥檕mi Indigenous Student Centre (515 Dalton Hall), this program is meant to introduce students, new staff, and faculty to Elder Judy Clark, 69传媒Elder in Residence. The session will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on September 19. The Centre will offer a smudge, snacks and a chance for people to ask Elder Judy questions and hear about what she has been up to this summer. All are welcome.

69传媒Research Services is relaunching Research on Tap, and we'd like your help.
Research on Tap provides an opportunity to talk about research and network with the public in a casual setting. The first session will take place at the Fox and Crow on Wednesday, October 11, at 7:00 pm for an evening of informal discussion and dialogue.
Each session is led by one or two faculty researchers from 69传媒who present the central theme/topic in about 10-15 minutes in a way that is accessible, insightful, and exciting to the lay audience. The rest of the time is for questions and discussion. The conversation is interesting, engaging, and lively.
A second Research on Tap session is planned for Wednesday, November 15 (location TBD, likely off campus).
Are you and/or a colleague interested in leading one of these discussions? If so, please provide a short abstract to Research Services (researchservices@upei.ca) describing your topic and emphasizing how it would be of interest now to the PEI public. Please also indicate your preferred session (October or November). The deadline for expressions of interest for both fall sessions of Research on Tap is September 25, 2023.

Welcome to the new school year!
The 69传媒Health Research Network is looking for full/part-time undergraduate students for the Connections program starting the last week of September 2023!
Would you like to meet new friends and be involved in an inclusive and non-judgmental environment to learn about food, health, stress, coping, and physical activity?
The staff at the Health Research Network is offering a free eight-session program to help connect undergraduate students to provide an environment for learning on a variety of topics around health and well-being and connecting to the student community. Snacks will be provided at each session!
This free program will include a total of eight weekly group education sessions which include 1 hour with a registered dietitian and 1-2 hours of exercise sessions with a kinesiologist (plus open gym times) located in the lower level of the Steel Building. These sessions will be student-centered so we welcome any level of knowledge and ability.

Overview: All Canadians are called to learn about Canada鈥檚 relationship with Indigenous peoples and how we can move forward in reconciliation and restitution. In the Indigenous Cultural Awareness course, facilitator Julie Pellissier-Lush will highlight and explain in-depth the traditional knowledge of the Mi鈥檏maq (the Indigenous peoples of Mi鈥檏ma鈥檏i, and specifically Epetwitk), their life before contact with Europeans, the role of colonization on the Mi鈥檏maq, and how all Canadians move forward positively with Indigenous peoples. This will be done in a fun way that will focus on participants feeling safe in the learning circle provided and ensure all taking part in the course will leave with a greater knowledge of traditional Mi鈥檏maq teachings, history and how to engage and grow through truth, reconciliation, and restitution.
Designed for: Anybody, from employees to executives, to managers and entrepreneurs, who wish to learn about the traditional ways and knowledge of Indigenous 鈥� specifically Mi鈥檏maq 鈥� people, their journey, and how all Canadians can move forward positively in terms of truth, reconciliation, and restitution with Indigenous peoples
