Student Affairs requires a Manager of Accessibility Services to oversee disability support services and accommodations for undergraduate and graduate students. The Manager oversees staff who assist students with disabilities in their transition and adjustment to the university, accepts and reviews disability documentation, and determines appropriate and reasonable accommodations in the classroom and other campus activities as well as providing some front line service when demand increases. The Manager of Accessibility Services collaborates with faculty and staff to establish awareness and legal compliance to ensure all students have equal access to all programs, services and activities at UPEI.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will:

  • Meet with individual students and their families to identify student needs
  • Develop individualized accommodation plans for students with disabilities 
  • Review and interpret psycho-educational and other professional documentation as related to a successful university experience
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with faculty and administrative personnel across campus, serving, as a resource for faculty and staff as they work to meet the academic needs of students with disabilities
  • Consult with individual faculty as they implement accommodations and support students with varying needs
  • Assist students in gaining financial support of the Canada Study Grant and other bursaries surrounding accessibility
  • Maintain associations with community agency groups who provide services for people with disabilities
  • Facilitate and provide educational workshops for faculty and staff at 69传媒regarding accessibility issues
  • Chair the campus wide Access-Ability committee and work with other university departments to implement the long-term plan to enhance 69传媒accessibility
  • Conduct evaluation of the recommended strategies on student success and accessibility
  • Manage staffing levels and scheduling of staff in Accessibility Services unit 
  • Train and supervise the work of staff and student assistants
  • Maintain confidential case records, relevant statistical data and required reporting information
  • Participate in Department of Student Affairs management team
  • Perform other responsibilities as required
  • Collaborate with faculty to promote classroom strategies associated with accessibility
  • Provides interpretation and assistance in compliance with the 69传媒Academic Accommodation policy, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom and the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act and other applicable legislation to faculty, staff, and administrators. Advises students, faculty, and departments on appropriate and recommended reasonable academic accommodations and 鈥渦ndue hardship鈥

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • MEd in Inclusive Education, or equivalent - with a minimum of 3 years professional experience in educational program development for individuals with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and other disabilities 
  • Must have experience working with post-secondary students 
  • Experience overseeing the implementation of individual student program plans, reading and interpreting psycho-educational assessments and other professional documentation as related to successful student learning 
  • Must have experience interpreting legislation around disabilities and duty to accommodate
  • Must have experience with recent adaptive technology as an academic accommodation
  • Working understanding and knowledge of disabilities and accommodations for students necessary
  • Demonstrated community involvement and knowledge of disability services in the community
  • Demonstrated leadership ability a must
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • A candidate who contributes to the diversity of the Student Affairs department is an asset
  • Experience writing grant proposals and receiving money through proposals you have written is an asset
  • Experience with managing a budget an asset 
  • Experience writing policy on accessibility an asset
