| Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies, Office of Study Abroad and International Collaboration

Ten 69传媒students learned about the distinctions and commonalities among Indigenous peoples worldwide by comparing their language and knowledge with that of the M膩ori people during the Maymester course, 鈥淕lobal Indigenous Language and Cultural Ways of Knowing,鈥 which took place at 69传媒and in New Zealand from May 6 to June 13.

Dr. Angelina Weenie, from Sweetgrass Nation, Saskatchewan, has been appointed dean of the 69传媒Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies (IKERAS) for a five-year term effective July 1, 2024.

The Mawi鈥檕mi Indigenous Student Centre at 69传媒is hosting a series of events leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which is September 30, 2023.

The 69传媒Cairo Campus has introduced a new course, Indigenous Teachings, that aims to expand students' knowledge about a crucial part of Canadian history relating to Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations to present day. David Varis, 69传媒assistant professor in the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies (IKERAS) was the first to teach the course to students at the 69传媒Cairo Campus. He recently returned from the campus in Egypt where he taught the in-person portion of the course to 25 students.

A special ceremony and presentation was hosted by the Native Council of PEI (NCPEI) to recognize the 69传媒 for its commitment and outstanding contributions to the ongoing work toward reconciliation with Indigenous communities. The event took place on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 10:00 am in Schurman Market Square at Don and Marion McDougall Hall.

Starting September 7, 2022, all members of the Indigenous community on Prince Edward Island will have the opportunity to learn the Mi鈥檏maw language at no cost.

This month, 69传媒is proud to commemorate in recognition of the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and M茅tis Peoples across Canada. Canada has officially celebrated National Indigenous History Month for the month of June since 2009.

The excitement was palpable at the 69传媒 this past week when the Class of 2022 graduated with their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The 69传媒鈥檚 Charlottetown campus is now home to a temporary, cone-shaped Indigenous structure, known as a tipi, that has been erected between the Kelley Memorial Building and the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.

IKERAS PhD Student Bursary

Awarded to an Indigenous individual living on Prince Edward Island, registered as an existing, returning, or new PhD student at UPEI. Bursaries of $2,000 will be awarded to each recipient, per term.
