Dr. Katie Hoddinott, assistant professor of small animal surgery, Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), 69传媒, has received the PEI Veterinary Medical Association鈥檚 (PEIVMA) Leadership Award.

The award recognizes a veterinarian鈥檚 strong career of achievement and dedication to the profession, their community, and the health and welfare of animals.

鈥淒r. Hoddinott鈥檚 accomplishments are an outstanding example of what makes our profession great,鈥� says Dr. Meagan Walker, nominator, and small animal surgery resident at AVC. 鈥淣ot only is she an incredibly talented surgeon, but she is also a dedicated teacher, innovative researcher, and exceptional role model.鈥�

An alumna of AVC, Hoddinott is a small animal surgeon at the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She is also a small animal surgery residency coordinator, rotating internship coordinator, master of science student advisor, and a committee member of the Department of Companion Animals. Hoddinott has also authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed papers, presentations, and book chapters.

A highly skilled surgeon, Hoddinott interests are in surgical oncology, soft tissue surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. Through her skillset and knowledge, she has been able to offer procedures that had not previously been available to pets in Atlantic Canada, such as thoracoscopic lung lobectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, and subcutaneous ureteral bypasses.

Hoddinott鈥檚 outstanding surgical skills not only help patients but also benefit students at AVC.

鈥淪urgical exercises can be an enormous amount of stress and anxiety for students,鈥� explains Walker. 鈥淏ut Dr. Hoddinott creates a positive teaching environment where she provides instruction and feedback in a patient and constructive manner. She also volunteers through the student-run surgery club to provide students with additional hands-on learning opportunities.鈥�

The PEIVMA Leadership Award is presented annually and is the highest award given by the organization.
