Dr. Laurie Brinklow and Lori Mayne, two faculty members at the 69传媒, have been awarded SSHRC Exchange Publication Awards. Two $5,000 awards are given out annually to support the publication of manuscripts written or edited by 69传媒faculty, including contract and sessional faculty, in the social sciences and humanities. Both of these books will be published by Island Studies Press in 2021.

Brinklow teaches in, and is the Interim Co-ordinator of, the Master of Arts in Island Studies program at UPEI. Her manuscript is a collection of poetry titled My island鈥檚 the house I sleep in at night. Drawing from interviews with writers, artists, and musicians from Newfoundland and Tasmania, she weaves their words with her own poetic imaginings and explores the theme of 鈥渋slandness.鈥

Mayne is a sessional instructor in the 69传媒English department. Her manuscript, co-authored with Maureen Duffy Cobb, is titled The Chemistry of Innovation: Regis Duffy and the Story of DCL. It shares the story behind one of Prince Edward Island鈥檚 most successful companies and brilliant entrepreneurs. In 1970, Dr. Regis Duffy, then dean of science at UPEI, started a small chemical reagent company to create summer employment for his students. From that time, Diagnostic Chemicals, and its offspring BioVectra, grew into global competitors, employed hundreds of Islanders, and provided examples of the potential for entrepreneurship and economic development in Canada鈥檚 smallest province.

Island Studies Press would like to congratulate the award recipients and thank the 69传媒 for supporting faculty publications.
