The Department of Music Recital Series 2018-2019 is pleased to present Two and a Half Sopranos featuring Rebecca Apps, soprano; Sung Ha Shin-Bouey, soprano; Hannah O'Donnell, mezzo soprano in collaboration with Paul Rodermond and Frances Gray, piano. The concert will take place at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available at the door.   The performers will delight audiences with works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Strauss, Brahms, Korngold, and others.     All are welcome.   About the Artists:   Soprano Sung Ha Shin-Bouey is a prize winner of several international vocal competitions, including the Britten-Purcell Prize in England and the Francisco Vi帽as in Spain. She was a Finalist in the Pavarotti Competition. After her studies from University of Toronto, she continued with her career development studies in England, Italy, and Germany for four years, which were funded by the Ontario and Canada Council Arts Grants.  She has performed numerous concerts  in Canada, Italy, Germany, England, the United States, and Israel. She was featured on CBC Radio & Television, CTV Television, BBC Radio & Television, and Israel Radio. She has performed with the English Chamber Orchestra, the Aldeburgh Chamber Players, the Britten-Pears Orchestra, L'Orquestra del Gran Teatro de Liceo in Barcelona, the Vancouver Symphony, and the Calgary Philharmonic, to name a few.  Prof. Shin-Bouey is currently an Associate Professor at UPEI, where she directs the vocal and choral programs.   Praised for her 鈥減owerful voice filled with emotion" (Bracebridge Examiner), Canadian soprano Rebecca Apps' highlights include Fiordiligi in Mozart鈥檚 Cos矛 fan tutte (Centre for Opera Studies in Italy), Mimi in Puccini鈥檚 La boh猫me (Muskoka Chautauqua), Eurydice in Offenbach鈥檚 Orph茅e aux Enfers (UofT Opera), and Clomiri in the Toronto premier of Handel鈥檚 Imeneo (UofT Opera). Her extensive training has led her to the FCMF National Music Festival, the CFMTA National Voice Competition, and the Atlantic Young Artist Tour Competition. Rebecca currently holds a Masters of Music in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the 69传媒, and a Diploma in Musical Theatre Performance from St. Lawrence College.   Hannah O鈥橠onnell, mezzo soprano, holds her Master of Music in vocal performance and pedagogy from Memorial University (NL) and her Bachelor of Music from the UPEI, where she studied under Prof. Shin-Bouey.  Opera credits include Madame Flora/Baba in Menotti's The Medium (MUN Opera), Ruggiero in Handel鈥檚 Alcina (Lucca, Italy), Marcellina in Mozart鈥檚 The of Marriage Figaro (69传媒Opera) and two seasons with Opera RoadShow in NL.  Concert works include the premiere of Cantata for Canada 150, with the PEI Symphony Orchestra, soloist in Handel鈥檚 Messiah at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, and guest soloist for Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. Currently she is on the School of Performing Arts faculty at Holland College and teaches privately at her studio, Middle Sea Music.   Paul Rodermond is a pianist and music director based in St. John鈥檚 Newfoundland. He has performed across the province in schools and theatre festivals in productions such as A Hand of Bridge and The Medium (Memorial University Opera Workshop), Into the Woods (Opera on the Avalon), Le Nez de la Sorci猫re (Opera Roadshow). As a music director for the Stephenville Theatre Festival in 2015, Paul directed A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline as well as the children鈥檚 show Rock 鈥榥 Fables.   Dr. Frances Gray, 69传媒Professor Emerita, taught in the areas of Piano and Music Theory. She earned her Bachelor of Music at McGill University and Master's and Doctoral degrees at Indiana University. She also attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, England on a Commonwealth Scholarship. She has given numerous solo and chamber music recitals throughout her career in addition to performing with the PEISO. Dr. Gray has frequently adjudicated music festivals, has been broadcast many times by CBC radio, and, at the Banff Centre of the Arts, has recorded three solo CDs, all nominated for East Coast Music Awards.
