Join 69传媒Student Affairs in their lounge to watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk "A Danger Of a Single Story" on Wednesday, October 15 at 4:30 pm. This talk begins by telling a story about what the speaker would write about as a child. She would write stories that were similar to the foreign stories she would read, which depicted children that looked nothing like her. When she found African stories, she realized that people like her could be involved in the stories. If we hear or read stories about a part of the world, we tend to perceive that part of the world as the stories describe those places. After viewing this Ted Talk, an open discussion will be held to discuss the complexity of the Talk.

Two graduate students in Biology will present the findings of their research in the Environmental Science and Human Biology research seminar series on Friday, October 24 in Duffy Science Centre, Room 204.
Hailey Lambe will speak to her MSc research conducted under the supervision of Drs. Marina Silva-Opps and Sheldon Opps as part of the Urban Fox project. Her talk, which starts at 12:30 pm is entitled: "Where does the fox stay? Den site selection and movement patterns of Charlottetown's red foxes." Luke MacDougall will speak to his MSc research conducted under the supervision of Dr. Rob Hurta on the effects of natural products on prostrate cancer cell growth. Luke's talk, which starts at approximately 1:00 pm is entitled: "Magnolol inhibits protein expression levels of cellular adhesion molecules in DU145 human prostate cancer cells in vitro."

The second candidate for Associate Dean, School of Engineering, Dr. Amarjeet Bassi, Western University will present on Friday, October 17, 10:45 am-12:00 pm in McDougall Hall, Room 243.
UPEI鈥檚 new School of Engineering is in the process of searching for its first Associate Dean who will be the academic, administrative, and community leader of the School. Two candidates have been short-listed and invited to campus for a public presentation and final interview process. This public presentation is an opportunity for the candidate to express their view to the campus community on 鈥淭he Role of the Associate Dean in Leading the New School of Engineering at UPEI.鈥�

Come for the camaraderie, stay for the Three Minute Thesis Open Mic! 3MT is an international competition where graduate students deliver lay-summaries of their research in less than three minutes. It鈥檚 fast past, hectic, and a lot of fun. We鈥檒l be participating in the formal competition this spring, but if you want a bit of practice, we鈥檒l give you a shot! If you鈥檇 like to participate, email datkinson@upei.ca. We鈥檒l start the competition around 6pm. We鈥檒l supply some great prizes! It's all in good fun, and great practice for the spring.

*John J. Sark Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship program was established in the name of distinguished Mi'kmaq Islander John James Sark in September 2009. He earned a post-secondary education at St. Dunstan's University, and was the Island's first Mi'kmaq teacher. It will be awarded to aboriginal students who have made a contribution to their First Nations, Inuit or Metis community, have commitment to their field of study, a strong academic performance and financial need. This award was established in April 2011 by students in the 69传媒Master of Business Administration program. It is well recognized that healthy living can lead to better health. Yet, MBA students also recognize that maintaining a successful healthy living strategy is never easy - let alone doing so while managing the added demands of an MBA program. It will be awarded to a student entering the second year of the Master of Business Administration Program at 69传媒who has made an extra effort to maintain and promote balanced healthy living, and who, in the process, sets an example of community leadership. There will be coffee and snacks in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall at 10:00am, followed by the talk at 10:30am in McDougall Hall, room 243.

On November 16, UPEI's Faculty of Education will host an international dinner and silent auction from 5:00-8:00 pm at Jack Blanchard Hall, 3 Pond Street, Charlottetown.
