The Academic Planning Group is a Senate committee charged with developing an Academic Plan for UPEI. This plan will inform our future academic decisions as a campus. The attached survey is designed to get preliminary feedback from the campus community as to what they think should be included in an Academic Plan. The survey should take between 5-10 minutes to complete. The results are anonymous and will be used by the committee to help shape the plan. The 69传媒 is pleased to inform you that Mr. Henry Tam, proud alumnus (BBA鈥�73), scholarship donor, and chair of UPEI鈥檚 Alumni and Friends Toronto Chapter, will visit campus on Monday December 15 to deliver a presentation about his life-altering experience as a student at UPEI. In 1969 Mr. Tam travelled from Hong Kong to study at St. Dunstan鈥檚 University and UPEI. While here, Mr. Tam adjusted to a new culture and language, and excelled as a student. He was the first graduate of UPEI鈥檚 Bachelor of Business Administration program to win the prestigious Governor General鈥檚 silver medal, and has gone on to a successful career as a respected accountant, financial advisor, and tax consultant. He is founder and senior partner of H. Tam and Partner LLP, Chartered Accountants, in Toronto. Please join Mr. Tam in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Room 242, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, 4:00 pm, Monday, December 15.

The call for nominations for appointment to the rank of Professor Emeritus is now open. Please note that only 69传媒faculty are permitted to nominate faculty to professor emeritus. The deadline to submit nominations is Monday, February 2, 2015. Nominations should be forwarded to Dr. Bill Whelan, Chair of the Professor Emeritus Evaluation Committee, Department of Physics, UPEI, 550 University Ave., Charlottetown, PE C1A 4P3. The Professor Emeritus Evaluation Committee will consider all nominees and forward its recommendations to Senate. Senate is the final approval body and will notify nominees of its decision. The Masters in Nursing Graduate Studies Committee will host a Master of Nursing Thesis Examination on Thursday, December 18 at 2:00 pm. Darlene Robison, BScN, will defend her Master of Nursing thesis entitled 鈥淭he Lived Experience of Dignity in Older Adults Living with Schizophrenia: A Phenomenological Study.鈥� The presentation will be held in the Health Sciences Building, Room 105. Everyone is welcome.

It鈥檚 that time of year again, when Islanders wrap themselves in layers of scarves and warm caps, or snuggle under blankets with cups of hot chocolate. The people from another great northern island, Iceland, share this annual rite, too. But while they have much in common with us, they have their own distinctive characteristics. UPEI's Island Studies, in partnership with the Vinland Society of Prince Edward Island, invites you to a cozy evening of Icelandic culture. On January 6, in UPEI鈥檚 SDU Main Building, Faculty Lounge, settle back into a comfy armchair and some 鈥淰铆narterta鈥� and take in the scenery from the country鈥檚 spectacular landscape, listen to the sagas, and enjoy the art and culture of these northern islanders who sailed our way some 1,000 years ago. Iceland is a natural wonder, with volcanoes, hot springs, vibrant culture, and horse trails. Prince Edward Island photographer John Sylvester will give a taste of this in a slide show from his recent trip there, whetting your appetite for a closer look at the culture, including a short reading from the sagas, a bit of music, poetry, and a little practice with the language, which was brought by the Norse in the 9th century. English is also spoken in most places, but the traveller who might be dreaming of going to this island country would probably want to know a bit of the national tongue. Sigga MacEachern, who was originally from Iceland and who now calls Prince Edward Island home, will spice up your 鈥淚celandic Evening鈥� with an introduction to some of the most common words that might be used on your journey. She has also graciously volunteered to provide a sample of a traditional seasonal taste treat. The evening is open to all who have a heart for adventure, and begins at 7:30 pm. Admission is by donation, and there will be a cash bar. Come on to the Faculty Lounge in SDU Main Building for some armchair Icelandic!

Respiratory Protection Training will be offered by Larry Koughan of All-tech Environmental Services on Friday, December 19 from 9:00-11:00 am鈥�. Room to be announced. This session will provide information regarding the care, selection, and use of respirators. Whether you currently have a respirator, or if you think you may need one for certain work tasks, then you should attend this session. Those who need to be trained, must be retrained every second year as a refresher. This session is also an important educational opportunity for those who supervise work, involving individuals who may need respiratory protection. There is no cost to attend this training as it is covered by the Health and Safety budget. Respiratory Fit Testing is required annually for anyone who uses a respirator in order to ensure a proper fit. Respiratory fit testing will take place on the same day and location starting at 11:30 am. Please book a 30-minute time slot through Megan in HR. Individuals must take their respirator or purchase one for the fit testing. As per the CSA Standard, faces must be clean shaven in order to have a respiratory fit test.
