The Department of Pathology & Microbiology will be hosting a retirement celebration for three of our friends and colleagues on Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 2 - 4 in the AVC McCain Learning Commons.

Please join us in celebrating the careers of Dr. Barb Horney, Dr. Scott McBurney, and Patty McKenna.

Light refreshments will be provided.

The Health & Safety Education Session being held today at 1:00 p.m. still has room for additional participants. If you would like to attend today's session but have not registered please show up to Don and Marion McDougall Hall room 243 a few minutes before the 1:00 p.m. start time and register in person. In order to allow ITSS sufficient time to install new and upgraded software in student computer labs so that students have the software resources needed for the fall semester (September 2017), we must receive requests including any installation media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) and any related licensing information such as serial numbers before June 1, 2017. (NOTE: Software should be Windows 7 compatible and is required to be licensed as network installations, not for single workstations only.)

Email all requests to Stephen at smahar@upei.ca. Any requests received after June 1 will be applied in the next round of software updates. ITSS appreciates your co-operation.

Dr. Charlotte Pye will be presenting a seminar on the topic of Large Animal Dermatoses on Wednesday, May 24 at 8:30 am in Lecture Theatre 鈥楥鈥�, AVC.  Any interested faculty/staff are invited to attend. A copy of her CV & letter of application are available upon request.

Dr. Pye (AVC class of 2009) will interview for the open, tenure-track faculty position in dermatology in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. Pye is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology and is currently working in private practice in Guelph, Ontario. Dr. Pye returns to AVC three times a year to teach clinical rotations in dermatology in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. As well, she provides dermatology lectures to 3rd year DVM students as part of VCA 322.

Rural tourism will be the subject of a public symposium at 69传媒on Wednesday, May 24, 7-9 pm, in the Alex H. MacKinnon Lecture Theatre, Room 242, Don and Marion McDougall Hall. 鈥淭ourism, Place and Identity: Rural Tourism in Iceland and Prince Edward Island鈥� will feature Ms. Gudrun Gunnarsdottir of the Tourism Research Centre in Akureyri, Iceland. She will be joined by a Panel of authorities/practitioners in PEI Tourism, including Dr. Ed MacDonald from History and Ann Worth from Meetings and Conventions PEI.

All are welcome to attend!

Applications for the Dr. L.I. Duffy Memorial Award will be acceptd unti June 1. Open to a Canadian student who has attended 69传媒as part of their undergraduate studies and will be attending an accredited Dentistry school this fall. to review the award criteria.

The Faculty of Arts was saddened to hear of the passing of the Rev. Dr. Ian "David" Morrison, a retired faculty member and founding member of the Department of Religious Studies. The entire 69传媒community extends its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the long-time professor, counsellor, and minister. Dr. Morrison was instrumental in transforming what was essentially a department of Catholic theology into an inter-denominational and inter-religious department of religious studies. He was an extremely popular teacher and an accomplished scholar. His course on Christianity, which introduced students to the many forms of Christian thought and worship, was especially popular. He was very engaged with the on-campus community as well as the Island- and indeed world-wide community, where he generously donated his time and energy to many worthwhile causes. Visitation takes place Friday, May 19, with the funeral on Saturday, May 20. Please for complete arrangements.

The School of Sustainable Design Engineering at 69传媒is launching its first ProGRES Summer Program to promote engineering research interest and involvement among high school girls. Through the ProGRES Program, high-school girls will have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research projects with world-class researchers in state-of-the-art facilities. The selected students will work directly with a woman faculty researcher and mentor on an independent research project, and they will have opportunities to meet and work with women engineers and women engineering students.

High school girls going into grades 11 and 12 are encouraged to apply for the ProGRES Summer Program. Please for complete program information and application.

Application deadline is 5:00 pm on June 7, 2017!

The campus community is invited to attend a research presentation by Dr. Stephanie Palmer, a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Studies. Dr. Palmer's presentation is entitled 鈥淓arth Observation of Water Resource Climate Variables鈥� and will take place on May 18, 2017 at 9:30 am in Rm 204 of the Duffy Science Centre.

The final Island Studies Lecture of the season is Tuesday, May 16, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge, featuring Mauritius native and now Prince Edward Islander, Ms. Ouma Cuniah, speaking about the economic success of her home island, Mauritius. She will explore the drivers behind the economic development of the island, and draw comparisons and parallels with other islands sharing similar history, and with Prince Edward Island.

Ouma has been working at 69传媒since July 2015. She holds a master鈥檚 degree in Commerce, and as a Chartered Certified Accountant has worked closely with the corporate sector in Mauritius and other neighbouring islands for nearly two decades.

Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

This list will be used to ensure that employees in confined spaces have received appropriate training and are following the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations while in such spaces.

Confined space is defined as an enclosed or partially enclosed space,
a) not designed or intended for human occupancy.
b) with restricted access or exit; and
c) that is or may become hazardous to a person entering it because of its design, construction, location, atmosphere or the materials or substances in it or other conditions, and includes any bin, tank, tanker, tunnel, silo, sewer, vault, chamber, pipeline, pit, vessel, vat and flue.

69传媒is proud to host the second Pan-Canadian Conference on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), May 31 to June 2. UDL is an educational framework based on research in the learning sciences that guides the development of flexible learning environments that can accommodate individual learning differences.

The conference hopes to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue and to offer participants a multi-faceted overview of current Canadian initiatives. To this end, the conference will offer a stream for student services and student affairs professionals, another specifically for instructional designers, and one showcasing the learner voice. The conference organizers hope to attract UDL practitioners from overseas in order to allow for an emerging international dialogue on UDL implementation and research. The theme of the conference also seeks to create a bridge between the UDL discourse and the User Experience (UX) literature, and welcomes participants from the community at large.
