At the request of Acting 69传媒President Dr. Greg Keefe, Dr. John VanLeeuwen has agreed to carry out the role of Interim Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Atlantic Veterinary College.

Dr. VanLeeuwen is a Professor of Epidemiology and Ruminant Health Management and has been at AVC since 1997. He has served as Chair of the Department of Health Management since June 1, 2021. The Teaching and Learning Centre is pleased to announce the launch of a new internal research grant focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Faculty and Instructional staff such as lab instructors are eligible to apply for the Internal SoTL Research Grant (ISRG).

Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded for SoTL research initiatives at UPEI. Researchers are encouraged to propose collaborations with colleagues from different, but complementary, disciplines which can also provide high-quality student training opportunities.

SoTL involves:

  • asking meaningful questions about student learning, and about the teaching activities designed to facilitate student learning,
  • answering those questions by making relevant student learning visible to gather evidence of thinking and learning, and then systematically analyzing this evidence, and
  • sharing the results of that analysis publicly to invite peer review, and to contribute to broader bodies of knowledge on student learning, and
  • aiming to improve student learning by strengthening the practice of teaching (one鈥檚 own and others鈥).

Guidelines and application forms for the ISRG are available on the Research Services Internal Funding page

Please submit applications using the 69传媒Romeo Researcher Portal. The deadline for proposals is January 21, 2022 by 4:00 pm.  Applicants will be notified in early February.

If you have any questions about the funding, process, or if you鈥檇 like to discuss your idea, please reach out to Charlene VanLeeuwen, Teaching and Learning Centre Coordinator at 902.620.5217 or cvanleeuwen@upei.ca

The pandemic has encouraged new pedagogical perspectives and possibilities for many educators, including the various ways we can blend in-person and online, synchronous and asynchronous, learning modalities. In the past two years, instructors have adapted their teaching and tried new approaches, often with little time to reflect and prepare. Now with the benefits of a little more time, a few more resources, and far more experience, faculty can create well-design blended courses or programs that centre on students and provide engaged, active, and interactive learning experiences, in both physical and virtual environments. This blended approach can also provide flexible, equitable and more individualized learning opportunities for students.  The emerging pedagogies and concepts being developed and explored in blended teaching and learning are leading to innovations that will be vital as we transition to an educational world that combines the aspects of space and time in new and meaningful ways.

The call for proposals closes February 7, 2022. For further details on how to submit a proposal please go to:

Please help get the word out and invite your students to our next Free Food event.  Free Food - Chili and DahlTuesday December 14 12:00 - 1:30 and 5:00 - 6:30 pm
