Background: These annual awards and scholarships were established by Dr. Margaret F. Munro. Dr. Munro was central to the creation of the 69传媒School of Nursing beginning in 1990 when she was seconded from the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary to develop the nursing program at the 69传媒. In 1991, Dr. Munro was invited to become the Founding Dean of the new 69传媒School of Nursing and remained in that position until July 1997 when she retired. The curriculum of this school was the first in Canada to be developed based directly on the principles of primary health care. From its inception in 1992, the 69传媒School of Nursing has maintained the goal of preparing graduates to practice nursing from those principles and also to give leadership in primary health care through their own professional nursing practice. In 2000, Dr. Munro wrote the book Forward in Faith: Establishing the School of Nursing at the 69传媒 telling the story of the School's beginnings. In 2011, the 69传媒School of Nursing welcomed its first cohort of Master in Nursing students. Dr. Munro supports the 69传媒School of Nursing in many ways. She provides for awards and scholarship and offers guidance on program delivery and teaches. She has also participated as a community member in the health assessment component of the Nursing Program. Dr. Munro established six awards for nursing students at UPEI, some of which were supported through endowments and others through annual gifts. In 2016, Dr. Munro made a very generous decision to fully endow all of her six awards at UPEI.
