2010 Gairdner Student Lecture: Do you want to be a medical detective?

Dr. Dave Sackett is a medical doctor who does a lot of 鈥渕edical detective鈥 research in order to find better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia, poisonings, severe diabetes, and advanced cancer. As 鈥渕edical detectives,鈥 Dr. Sackett鈥檚 team was the first to ask whether aspirin could prevent strokes and heart attacks (yes it can!), and whether nurse-practitioners could do a great job and take care of 80% of the patients who come to a family physician鈥檚 office (yes they can!). In order to help you decide whether you might want to become a 鈥渕edical detective鈥, Dr. Sackett will present you with one or two 鈥渃ases鈥 his group was asked to solve. Senior high school students who come hear Dr. Sackett talk will be treated to lunch and a tour of the 69传媒campus. Call (902) 566-0488 to register.
