The Island Lecture Series April session celebrates Poetry Month and features two Island poets in conversation with a third. Laurie Brinklow and Bren Simmers will read from their new books, My Island鈥檚 the house I sleep in at night (Island Studies Press, 2021) and If, When (Gaspereau Press, 2021), in a conversation hosted by Richard Lemm. Topics range from the role of story, place, and history in their poetry to their own poetic practices. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.

The AVC Department of Pathology and Microbiology will be interviewing 4 candidates for the tenure track faculty position in Veterinary Bacteriology.  

Our first candidate, Dr. Jean Mukherjee, has over 20 years of experience in teaching, contract research, biosafety, infection control and management of a high security laboratory.  She has a broad teaching portfolio that includes veterinary and human microbiology, parasitology and pharmacology.  Her research has mainly focused on the development of antibody-based diagnostic and therapeutic agents and establishment and use of various animal models for evaluation of candidate biologic and small molecule therapeutics.  She has worked extensively with an array of biological toxins and pathogens, including, botulinum toxin, ricin, Cryptococcus neoformans, Clostridioides difficile, E. coli 0157 and ESKAPEE organisms.  During the last year, she has served as the course coordinator for VPM 2010 Bacteriology and Mycology and taught the helminthology section of VPM 1220 Parasitology within the Department of Pathology and Microbiology.

          1) Shoulders and Upper Body:   Wednesdays 10:00 am - 11:30 am, May 5, 12, 19 and 26

This series will include a comprehensive approach to the entire body while focusing on a particular area for optimal health and vitality.

Do you supervise students (graduate or undergraduate) to do research or as award winners? Are you hiring a summer student?

Health, Safety and Environment will be hosting a session for Supervisors put on by the PEI Workers Compensation Board (WCB) entitled: Young Worker Safety: Changing the Culture.

Participants will learn what is now known about the significant influence supervisors can have on young worker safety, and how employers and supervisors might capitalize on this. Participants will hear what young PEI workers say about their hesitation to raise their workplace safety concerns, and what they can do to encourage young workers to speak up.

The one hour Zoom Session will be held on Monday, May 10 at 1:30 pm

We will have a series of sessions scheduled between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on June 3rd and between 9:00am and 12:00pm on June 4th, 2021.

This year鈥檚 conference theme is inspired by the region we live in and the connectivity we all enjoy. Atlantic Canada is unique in many ways but most of all the ability to 鈥渂ubble up鈥� and move between all four provinces seamlessly while learning from one another and internationalizing our communities and campuses together. As international educators, we are always fully committed to achieving our internationalization objectives. During this regional meeting, we will explore an array of topics under our three main areas: student mobility, recruitment/retention of international students, and immigration and employment.

The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care has implemented new guidelines for testing for STIs Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. The new guidelines recommend that individuals under the age of 30 who are sexually active with one partner (average risk) should get tested yearly.  If you have more than one partner (high risk) the recommendation is to get tested every three months.  

Why get tested? 

• Both of these infections often don't show symptoms and so you may not realize you have been infected.
• If left untreated they can lead to more serious problems including pelvic inflammatory disease/pain/infertility
• Both conditions are curable with antibiotics and can be treated right here on campus

How do I get tested?

• You can perform self-tests in various higher traffic public washrooms on campus and drop the specimen off at the 69传媒Health & Wellness Centre Mondays-Thursday and until noon on Fridays
• You can request a test at the 69传媒Health & Wellness Centre
• Health Centre staff/physicians will be offering you screening during regular appointments

What happens if my test comes back positive?

• You will be contacted by a health care provider to come in for counseling and treatment
• As both Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are considered Communicable Diseases under the Public Health Act the Public Health Nurses will conduct contact tracing to ensure we can treat contacts as well.  

Other considerations:

• If you are considered high risk, you could request testing for Sexually Transmitted Blood-Borne Infections (ask at the Health Centre)
• Always wear a condom, use a dental dam - available free at the Health Centre; 
• Lower your risk by practicing safe sex
• Get tested

Thank you to the many volunteers who have helped staff the food bank over the past months.  Numbers fluctuate but we seem to welcome 50-75 students each week.  Gratefully, our donations are keeping up.

The Faculty of Arts is pleased to offer the fourth event in its new ConneXions Seminar Series. Join us on Zoom, Friday, April 23, 2021, at 2:00 pm, when Dr. Yuliya Rashchupkina will present 鈥淐limate Resilience and Climate Catastrophe Narratives: Is There Any Place for International Solidarity?鈥�

Abstract:

As the negative impacts of climate change become more and more evident, the different narratives around living in a future with increasing temperatures have been established by scholars and international organizations working on the issues of climate change and development. While these narratives are vastly diverse, two groups of discourses may be discerned: one of calamity, disaster and social hardship, while the other is of resilient communities capable of withstanding unprecedented challenges. Dr. Rashchupkina will discuss the limitations of the discourse of resiliency-oriented communities and of the discourse of calamity-unfolding events, arguing that both narratives are limited in their scope and the ability to mobilize actions that will facilitate the revamping of fossil fuels-based major economies and lead to the further enhancement of global justice. She will then demonstrate how the notion of international solidarity, currently overlooked in mainstream solutions to climate change, will help to overcome the limitations of both discourses.

UPEI鈥檚 4th annual Teaching Community Conference will take place on May 4th, 2021, hosted by the E-Learning Office and the Experiential Education Office. The conference will be hosted online through the website: UPEI.ca/teachingcommunityconference

The keynote presentation for this year鈥檚 conference is on the theme of a Pedagogy of Care, a care-oriented approach to the design and philosophical set up of the course, occurring within the context of the learning experience and in relationships formed through teaching and learning.

The Teaching Community Conference is calling for proposals regarding your approach to a pedagogy of care, innovative designs or approaches to teaching, experiential teaching, or communities of practice.

The Teaching Community Conference is accepting proposals in the form of synchronous webinar sessions, asynchronous recorded video presentations, or written presentations (e.g. a conference blog post).

Health, Safety and Environment is holding a 69传媒Basic Biosafety Training session.

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the 69传媒, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone including graduate students.
