Now that we can go on vacation again, remember to practice these travel tips to keep you cyber safe:

  • Limit what you do on public Wi-Fi. If possible, don't log into accounts that have sensitive information like banking/email/CRA etc.
  • Set your device settings to always ask permission before connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
  • It is important to remember that laptops, phones and tablets should never be left unattended. Ensure your devices are always with you. If you are staying in a hotel, the best thing to do is lock them in a safe. If a safe is not available, lock them in your luggage.
  • If you do work on holiday or really need to access your financial information on the road, make sure the systems you access use encryption. If you鈥檙e unsure if a website is encrypted, consider using a trusted virtual private network (VPN) or a personal/mobile hotspot for a more secure connection.

Happy travels.

Dear International Students of UPEI:

My name is Ye (Connie) Ding. As a part of my master鈥檚 degree in the Faculty of Education, I am conducting a study focusing on how international students utilize rubrics to support learning in the context of higher education that they are not familiar with. This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the 69传媒 Research Ethics Board (Ref No: 6009055).

I am recruiting international students who come from countries outside North America and use English as a second language. In addition, they must have completed at least one semester of study and have experienced rubrics in at least one course. One-on-one online interviews with 60 minutes for each one will be conducted.  A water bottle ($25 value) will be offered to each participant as an honorarium for participating in the interview.

Participation in this study is voluntary and there are no known or anticipated risks to your participation in this study. If you are interested in participating into this study, please contact me (yding4610@upei.ca) or my supervisor, Dr. Tess Miller (902-620-5072; tsmiller@upei.ca). Do not hesitate to reach out to us, if you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information to assist you in reaching a decision about participation. I very much look forward to your participation and thank you in advance for your assistance with this study.

MacBeth Bros. will begin roof replacements on sections of Cass Science Hall and Don and Marion McDougall Hall.

Cass Science Hall is scheduled to begin the week of August 16th and is expected to take approximately 1-1/2 weeks to complete. They will then relocate to Don and Marion McDougall Hall which is expected to take approximately 2 weeks to complete. This work is weather dependent.

Facilities Management apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jackie MacPhail at jmacphail@upei.ca or 902-566-6034.

This webinar will provide an introduction to the basics of using Moodle, whether you鈥檙e teaching an online course or using Moodle to help with your face-to-face course. This workshop will cover uploading files, course organization and navigability, and other useful features.

The Department of Pathology and Microbiology will be interviewing 3 candidates for the tenure track faculty position in Veterinary Parasitology.

Our first candidate, Dr. Nina Gillis-Germitsch, is a veterinary parasitologist working at the Institute of Parasitology, University of Zurich, Switzerland. She obtained her veterinary degree from the Vetsuisse faculty, University of Zurich in 2015. She became passionate about parasitology during her veterinary master studies, which focused on lungworms of foxes. In 2017 she obtained her veterinary doctorate (Dr. med. vet. / DVM) by studying the epidemiology and detection of lungworms in canids. She continued her path in veterinary parasitology by conducting a PhD in molecular parasitology with a focus on host-parasite interaction. She has been a lecturer of parasitology for 4 years and recently finished her residency of the European Veterinary Parasitology College.

SEMINAR:

Clinical relevance of Angiostrongylus vasorum and how it interacts with host coagulation

Teaching seminar:

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a cardiopulmonary nematode of dogs, which is challenging to diagnose and treat. It can cause respiratory distress and bleeding disorders in infected dogs. If left untreated the infection can be fatal. A. vasorum has been present in Newfoundland for several decades. The parasite has recently spread to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and now poses a threat to dogs in the Maritimes.

Research seminar:

The pathophysiology of bleeding disorders caused by A. vasorum is still unclear. The proteomic characterization of A. vasorum excretory/secretory proteins (ESP) and in vitro approaches, including N-terminomics, rotational thromboelastometry, and cell stimulation assays evaluating the effect of A. vasorum ESP and parasite-derived proteases on host coagulation and fibrinolysis shed light on the pathogenesis of coagulopathies upon A. vasorum infection.
