UPEI's Work-Integrated Learning department is partnering with Mi鈥檏maq Printing and Design to provide support for Orange Shirt Day / National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Mi鈥檏maq Printing and Design (MPD) is a social enterprise dedicated to the celebration and education of Mi'kmaq culture. This time of year, Islanders flock to MPD to purchase their orange shirts and show their support for those effected by the Canadian residential school system.

Students can join us from 10:00 am-2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 for an afternoon of volunteering with fellow 69传媒students. We'll be helping MPD get prepared for Orange Shirt Day by setting up their shop space out of St. Paul's church in Charlottetown, organizing inventory, folding shirts, and getting orders ready for their soon-to-be influx of eager customers. Students will gain hands-on experience, develop new skills, meet new people, and make a positive difference in their community.

For more information and to register, students can  before 4:00 pm on Friday, September 17th.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. The World Health Organization notes that while the link between suicide and mental disorders (in particular, depression and alcohol use disorders) is well established in high-income countries, many suicides happen impulsively in moments of crisis with a breakdown in the ability to deal with life stresses, such as financial problems, relationship break-up or chronic pain and illness.

In addition, experiencing conflict, disaster, violence, abuse, or loss and a sense of isolation are strongly associated with suicidal behavior. Suicide rates are also high amongst vulnerable groups who experience discrimination, such as refugees and migrants; indigenous peoples; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) persons; and prisoners. By far the strongest risk factor for suicide is a previous suicide attempt.

The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) is conducting a 2021 World Suicide Prevention Day Event.  See details below:

In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) will be hosting a virtual ONLINE EVENT on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 2:00 PM EST, in English with French subtitles, on this year鈥檚 theme of 鈥淐reating Hope Through Action鈥.

The event will feature presentations by a group of panelists who will share their unique experiences of suicide-related behaviors and actions and what was and wasn鈥檛 supportive to them during this time.  Following the presentations, there will be a live Q & A. At the end of the session, participants will be encouraged to participate later that evening in a 鈥淐andle Vigil鈥, by placing a lit candle in their window to 鈥淟ight a Flame of Hope鈥 at 8:00 pm in their respective time zones.

Crows on campus know if you have food or something that looks like food.

  • NEVER FEED the crows or drop food on the ground. This includes food wrappers.
  • KEEP FOOD HIDDEN inside a bag or backpack. Do not just carry a food container. Crows can smell it!
  • Should a crow start to attack you, WAVE YOUR HANDS and forcefully shoo them away and continue your walk. That way the crow will learn that it's not productive to show this type of behaviour.

If everyone on Campus is consistent in dealing with the crows, hopefully, we will all be able to enjoy our beautiful PEI summer outside!
